Sainte-Suzanne · North-east Réunion Island

Two holiday homes on the green side of Réunion Island

La Casa Moderna is a pair of self-catering houses in Sainte-Suzanne, fifteen minutes from the airport and ten from a 25-metre waterfall. Sergine, your host, welcomes guests in person.

Where you would be staying

Sainte-Suzanne sits on the north-east coast of Réunion Island, the greenest and wettest part of the island — which is exactly why the waterfalls, the sugar-cane fields and the tropical vegetation look the way they do here.

It is also a practical base. The airport is about fifteen minutes away, Saint-Denis twenty, and the Salazie crater — with the village of Hell-Bourg and the trailheads into Mafate — under an hour. You are never far from anything, and you sleep in a quiet street rather than in a resort.

~15 minfrom Roland-Garros airport
~20 minfrom Saint-Denis
10 minfrom Niagara waterfall
< 1 hfrom Hell-Bourg, Salazie

What both houses include

  • Free, secure parking inside a fenced property — worth more than it sounds when you drive a rental car around the island.
  • A fully equipped kitchen, so you can cook rather than eat out every night.
  • Free Wi-Fi and a television.
  • A terrace, and a garden at Le Tuit-Tuit.
  • Washing machine, linen and towels provided.
  • Self check-in with a secure key box when your flight lands at an awkward hour.

Good to know before you enquire Bookings start from two nights. We are not set up for single-night airport stopovers, and we would rather say so upfront.

Arriving and leaving

Long-haul flights from mainland France land early in the morning and take off late at night. Staying fifteen minutes from the airport means you drop your bags and start your holiday instead of driving across the island half asleep — and on the way home, you keep a full last day.

Tell us your flight times when you enquire and we will organise the arrival around them. Sergine greets guests in person whenever she can; otherwise the key box takes over.

What there is to do nearby

The Niagara waterfall drops 25 metres into a wide pool ten minutes from the house, reached by a concrete path — no hiking required. Bassin Bœuf is the quieter freshwater pool locals go to. The Bel-Air lighthouse, built in 1845, is the only lighthouse on the island, and La Vanilleraie at the Grand Hazier estate shows how Bourbon vanilla is actually made.

Swimming in rivers follows one local rule worth repeating: the dry season, roughly May to September, is the safe window, and you never swim after heavy rain, even under a clear sky. Flash floods travel fast and come from far upstream.

Our detailed guides are in French, but they are easy to follow with a translation tool: what to do in Sainte-Suzanne, the Niagara waterfall and Salazie, Hell-Bourg and Mafate.

FAQ

What guests usually ask

Do you speak English?

Yes, enough to sort out everything you need: arrival times, directions, local advice and practical questions during your stay. Written English by email is the easiest for us.

How far is the airport?

Roland-Garros airport is about fifteen minutes away by the dual carriageway, without going through Saint-Denis. It is a straightforward drive, even after a night flight.

Do we need a rental car?

Yes, we strongly recommend one. Réunion's sights are spread out and public transport does not fit a holiday schedule. Parking at the house is free and inside a fenced property.

How many people can you accommodate?

L'Oiseau de Paradis sleeps up to 6 guests in two separate bedrooms. Le Tuit-Tuit sleeps up to 4, with one air-conditioned bedroom and a convertible sofa in the living room.

How do we book?

Call or email us directly — that is the quickest way and it avoids platform fees. Both houses are also listed on Airbnb and Booking.com. Bookings start from two nights.

Ready to book?
